18 – The Marketplace of Ideas

In Uncategorized

There was a time when the U.S. was a marketplace not just for products but for ideas. If I liked chocolate ice cream and you preferred strawberry, you were free to eat strawberry, I was free to eat chocolate, and Blue Bell was free to manufacture both flavours.

It seems that today that is no longer true. People who don’t like chocolate ice cream now demand that it be taken off the market. They organize boycotts against Blue Bell until Blue Bell agrees to stop making chocolate ice cream. Worst of all, they say hateful things about me because I happen to say I like chocolate ice cream.

There is a far-left leaning Web site the name of which I’m not going to publish here. Every time someone looks at their site it generates a “hit” that allows them to charge more for their advertising. I don’t want to do anything that might help them stay in business.

Like many radical liberal Web sites, everything on their site is an op-ed piece masquerading as a news story. A few days ago they published an item about restaurant chains whose owners and franchisees were so politically conservative, and gave so much money to conservative causes, that many liberals refused to patronize them.

The “between the lines” message of the piece was obvious. “If you’re on this site you’re probably a liberal. If you’re a real liberal, you will boycott these restaurants.”

I wanted to share the list with you. I’ve done business with all of them in the past, but I plan to do a lot more in the future.

The businesses are:

  • Chik-fil-A
  • Carl’s Jr. (the company that used to be Hardee’s)
  • Domino’s Pizza
  • White Castle
  • Waffle House

I’ll see y’all there.
